Shopping Smart Offers Big Payoffs

Shopping Smart Offers Big Payoffs

Everyone has a learning style, and Nora Gift likes to jump in with both feet and soak up everything she can. Nora likes to stay physically active and enjoys mastering everyday challenges. She’s been focusing on developing her culinary skills recently by learning how to create a menu, list the needed ingredients and shop effectively.

The gregarious 26-year-old likes to shop and be a helpful part of the family. She’s got the support of Kelly Craighead, a Colorado Solutions Community Access Partner. “I like coming here with Kelly,” Nora said, as she studied her list. “She’s helped me think about shopping differently. I used to make a list and then go up three aisles to get one thing and back five to pick up something else.” Kelly nodded in agreement. “Nora realized it was faster and easier to jump around on her list than it was to walk in different directions in the store,” Kelly explained. “She’s a very skilled reader, so she can match the signs that describe the items in each aisle with her list.”

Working her way through the list, Nora stopped to survey the pepperoni. “My mom likes really healthy stuff, so we alternate,” Nora shared. “I pick up turkey pepperoni for her one week, and I eat it too. Then I buy the real thing the next week, and Mom eats it.” Nora is making significant progress in speeding up her time in the store. She has learned where most of the items are now that she’s been shopping at the same store for several weeks. One of Nora’s goals is to increase her independence, and learning more about shopping for her family is a step in the right direction.
