A Promise and a Haircut Lead to a Generous Donation

Over the past few months, many people have found themselves strapped for cash with just enough money to get by but little to give. This, however, hasn’t stopped some creative Coloradans from finding unique ways to donate to local non-profits. For Berwin Brezina, an employee of the Forerunner Corporation in Durango, it all started with a promise and ended with a much needed haircut. With this haircut and the help of his coworkers, he was able raise and donate $217 to Colorado Connections, Denver Options’ traumatic brain injury (TBI) program for Colorado residents.

Jenna, a coworker’s daughter, suffered a traumatic brain injury in an accident the summer of 2008. Before the accident, Jenna would come to the Forerunner Corporation to give haircuts to the employees. After her accident though, her TBI made it impossible for Jenna to cut hair, so Berwin made a promise to her. He promised that he would not cut his hair until Jenna could once again cut it for him.

At first Berwin thought about donating his long hair to Locks of Love, but he changed his mind when one of his coworkers offered to give him $20 if he got a mullet. This gave Berwin the idea to collect money for the upcoming haircut with Jenna and donate it. He decided to give the money to Colorado Connections because it “was the group that was most directly involved in Jenna’s recovery,” he said. Berwin said he views Colorado Connections’ services as “a relief to those who need it.”
